Why I Love Photography

People ask me why I love photography so much. Here are a few answers I use.

“I'm not good with words so I tell my story with photographs”

“Words confuse me so my book of words are seen in pictures”

“I have never been good with using words to tell a story so I do it with shades of light in photos”

“Words fail me photos tell my story”

“Photos are my books”

“I read many stories everyday without reading one word”

“I see life in shades of grey and colour through photography”

Me and my love for photography

I first discovered a fascination with taking pictures when I was a young child. A family member had given me a Kodak box camera and I shot two or three rolls of film. The resulting images were a disappointment. The expense of film and developing prevented me from going much further with it at that time; but the seed was planted.

I was a teenager when I truly discovered my passion for taking pictures.  I got my hands on a 35mm Pentax and started taking it everywhere I would go. During my travels I meet a few girls that wanted to get into modelling so I helped them setup their portfolios, I got my hands on some developing equipment and a photo enlarger and processed the flim myself.

A few years later I would put photography aside when I decided to pursue another of my interests, music. As the years passed, I kept many examples of my photographs around, even hanging a few pictures on my walls.. Often people would ask me why I didn’t continue taking pictures, as they looked at them.

I finally put my pursuit of music aside and return to photography. By now I started travelling around the world with South Africans National Airline SAA and my passion for photography started all over again.
In 2005, I was in Canada and bought my first Digital SLR, a DSC-P92 Sony cyber-shot 5.0 megapixel camera. In 2008 I entered into the more modern world of DSLRs  with a Nikon D60 and in 2012 added a Nikon D7000 to my collection.
